On 12th March 2016, in heavily Naxal affected area of Sitram, district Kanker (Chattisgarh), a patrol party went for domination operation in the village Bechaghat. While returning, naxal ambushed the party and fired from two directions. Vijay Kumar retaliated along with his associates, despite suffering multiple bullet injuries. Constable Vijay Kumar later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
