Rilfe Man Khampai Wangsu was part of a Road Opening Party (ROP) from Jairampur to Tinkopani. At around 0815 hours on 22 Jan 2017 the party came under heavy fire from both sides of the road from suspected ULFA (I) and NSCN (K) terrorists. The Road Opening Party along with Rifle Man Khampai Wangsu retaliated effectively and the fire fight continued for approx 30 minutes. Being the lead scout Rifle Man Khampai Wangsu was hit by terrorist bullet and attained martyrdom while being evacuated.
