On 05 Sep 2018, insurgents carried out attack on one of the Company Operating Base of the neighboring Border Guarding Battalion. Two columns under two officers and 29 ORs already operating near the border of 29 AR moved 30 Kms in inhospitable terrain, inclement weather, heavy rains established their stops and laid ambush next day by 0500hrs. The insurgents column were surprised and fire fight ensued between own column and insurgents. The officer move out from behind his cover and move towards the loc of the first scout, who had taken cover behind a tree. No G/2901799K Rifleman (General Duty) Champeswar Mahakhud provided cover fire for the officer, by firing towards the loc of the second scout, who he had likely spotted by this time. Rifleman Champeswar Mahakhud effective fire, pinned down the second scout. Rifleman Champeswar Mahakhud then decided to switch his cover, in order to get into a better firing position to engage the insurgents and essentially drew fire onto himself, which prevented the second scout from firing onto the officer. Rifleman (General Duty) Champeswar Mahakhud sustained gun shot wound from this exchange of fire from the insurgents and succumbed to his injury made the supreme sacrifice in the service in the service of the Nation in the best traditions of the Force.
